According to the Liverpool Echo, Sporting CP midfielder Matheus Nunes is waiting for Liverpool to make their move amidst interest from other Premier League clubs.

The 23-year-old has been one of the sought-after midfielders over the last year. He was linked with a move to Anfield earlier this summer, and that has intensified in the past day or two after it was confirmed that Thiago Alcantara is set to miss six weeks of action following his hamstring injury in the game against Fulham on Saturday.

It is further revealed in the report that Nunes has rejected an offer from fellow Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers. He wants to play and compete in the Champions League and challenge for trophies.

As of now, the Reds are without the services of Thiago, Curtis Jones, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in midfield. While Keita is expected to come back to training this week, the other three are out for a considerable period of time.

This does leave the squad a bit thin in the most important department of a football team. The team will now depend on the likes of Harvey Elliott and James Milner to support captain Jordan Henderson and Fabinho till the cavalry returns.

Keeping all these things in mind, it would not be a bad idea for Liverpool to go after Nunes and get him before the deadline day. At 23, he is a young and exciting prospect and already seems to have the tools to be a perfect fit for a Jurgen Klopp midfield.

The Portuguese international did extend his contract at Lisbon last October, keeping him at the club till the summer of 2026. So, the Reds would have to pay good money to get him now. However, seeing how they are short in midfield, spending that money can be the only sensible option.
