Former Liverpool player Jose Enrique urges Jurgen Klopp to hijack Wolverhampton deal for Portuguese midfielder

Former Liverpool left-back, Jose Enrique has urged the Reds to enter the race to sign Portuguese midfielder Matheus Nunes from Sporting CP. Contrarily, the Portuguese club has agreed on terms with Wolverhampton Wanderers for the transfer of the 23-year-old, as per Sky Sports.

Bruno Lage will fork out a club record £42.2m fee for the services of Nunes. Liverpool had quite recently pulled out of negotiations for the transfer of Nunes. Enrique’s call for the Reds to re-enter the negotiations has come quite late, to say the least.

The midfielder, who has a contract at Sporting until the summer of 2026, was also scouted by West Ham United and Manchester City. The reports suggest that Wolves are looking to register their player by this Friday, 19th August. That leaves Liverpool with little to almost no time to re-enter negotiations.

Having made a slow start to the season, and midfield being one of the major issues for the same, Enrique’s urge comes at just the right time for the club to re-think and invest in the squad.

With injuries to Thiago Alcantara, Curtis Jones and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Liverpool are in a fix in their pursuit of a starter midfielder. Furthermore, if Liverpool are to challenge on all fronts, we need better quality in our starting team than James Milner, who is in the dusk of his playing career.

He has been an integral part of the squad indeed, but thinking of the bigger picture, the club should look for long-term solutions. Sadly for Enrique and the fans that wanted to see Nunes at Anfield, it seems a deal has gone beyond the point of rescuing.

Instead, we would be wise to go out and target other players in that same position. It is baffling that we haven’t so far.

Next in the transfer window for Liverpool

Earlier, Liverpool gaffer Jurgen Klopp stated that the club was not going to do any “panic signings”. So late into the transfer market, and still not getting the ideal results, Klopp would be wise to enter the transfer market during these tough situations.

With only a handful of fit midfielders at this instant, it will be a bit frustrating for fans to see the end of the window without an addition. Otherwise, the club can look at Ismael Bennacer and Marcelo Brozovic as options instead of Nunes.
