Liverpool legends defends club’s 2022 summer transfer policy

Jamie Carragher defends Liverpool transfer business but warns the next one will be crucial

Speaking to Sky Sports, Jamie Carragher believes that Liverpool did as well as they could this transfer window. The Reds legend believes that the club “needed a striker” and they got one in Darwin Nunez early in the window.

Liverpool also needed reinforcements in the middle of the pitch and they roped in Fabio Carvalho from Fulham. While the youngster has so far proven his worth the club could have done with another central midfielder or two.

Furthermore, the current midfield lot at Liverpool is ageing and a few of them are injury-prone. Carra brought light to the fact that the likes of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita are part of the second category of the current midfielders at the club, and will move on next summer.

Next Transfer Window?

The former centre-back thinks that the transfer window next summer will be much more crucial as the Reds will be entering a transition phase. Oxlade-Chamberlain shall most probably be moved on, according to Carra, and so will Keita.

According to Jamie, Liverpool would “need to sign four-five” midfielders next summer, and that is why maybe Jurgen Klopp and his entourage didn’t go all out this time around. But they found a way out, signing a midfielder for a cheap rate, signing Arthur Melo from Juventus on loan.

Melo’s signing concluded the business of transfers in this window for the Reds. He joins Fabio Carvalho, Calvin Ramsay and Darwin Nunez as the new additions to the club in the summer window of 2022.

Carra’s monologue on the club might be coming from a place of bias as he has been part of the Reds for such a long time. But the fans know that this wasn’t the ideal way for the window to end, without signing a proper midfielder, and at least not on loan. But from the business point of view, the signing makes sense. As Kopites, we would hope for Arthur to shine bright and make a name for himself in Red.
