Liverpool’s offer made it impossible for Manchester United to sign Darwin Nunez

Liverpool FC signed Darwin Nunez earlier in the transfer window amid interest from multiple European clubs including Manchester United. Fabrizio Romano via Youtube (h/t Liverpool Echo) stated the major reasons why the Uruguayan joined the Reds over the Red Devils.

Darwin joined the Reds for what was a record fee of £85m. There were occasions during the transfer saga wherein the representatives of United felt an edge in their attempt to sign the 23-year-old. According to Romano, United did not wish to enter a bidding war and hence, pulled out of the deal.

Moreover, the opportunity of playing in the Champions League for a Premier League side is something Liverpool offered and Manchester United’s average outing last season saw them seal only a UEFA Europa League spot.

Romano stated:

“They wanted Darwin Nunez but Liverpool were offering a really important contract and Champions League football so the deal was not possible for United.”

“They didn’t want to enter any bidding war for him, so they decided to wait until next summer. It’s why the focus remains on a new striker for the future.”

Darwin had a good start to his career in Liverpool red, scoring in his first game against Manchester City in the FA Community Shield. Moreover, he followed it up with a goal and an assist against Fulham in the Premier League as well.

However, the problems started after that as he was sent off against Crystal Palace for violent conduct.

Since then, Darwin really has not got the opportunity to prove himself as he has not garnered enough minutes. With Roberto Firmino in top form as well, it gave gaffer Jurgen Klopp lesser reasons to start the Uruguayan.

With a number of fixtures slated in October and November in a tight space and the need for squad rotation, Darwin could be seen more often than not in action. As fans, we hope that he lives up to the price Liverpool paid for him and continues to score goals.
