Report: Liverpool interested in signing 28-year-old La Liga midfielder

Liverpool are interested in Real Betis midfielder Guido Rodriguez

According to Spanish news outlet Estadio Deportivo (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are interested in signing 28-year-old Argentinian midfielder Guido Rodriguez from Real Betis as they look to reinforce their struggling midfield.

The Reds signed Arthur Melo on loan from Juventus to alleviate some of the injury crisis that Liverpool were having in midfield but the Brazilian ended up getting injured himself and has been ruled out for the foreseeable future.

Whilst the report goes on to claim that the interest from Liverpool in Rodriguez is not concrete yet, the Reds are studying the possibility of signing the 28-year-old and how he will fit in at Anfield.

It emerged a few days ago that Liverpool are not the only club interested in signing the defensive midfielder, with Merseyside rivals Everton also said to be keen on making a move for the player, according to Sports Witness (h/t Liverpool Echo).

Manchester United and Chelsea have also been credited with an interest in the 28-year-old in the past but a move never really materialised for the player. The defensive midfielder has been at Real Betis since 2020 when he joined from America.

Predominantly a defensive midfielder, Rodriguez is also capable of playing further forward in central midfield. Liverpool really do not need a holding midfielder right now, with Fabinho filling that role.

The Argentinian has had a pretty good start to the current campaign, playing 10 games for Real Betis across all competitions and scoring a solitary goal. Rodriguez has also won 25 caps for the national team, scoring one goal.

Rodriguez is also expected to be a part of the national team squad for the World Cup in Qatar. If he can continue his good performances for both Betis and the national team, then Jurgen Klopp might want to sign the midfielder in January.

It is still not very clear if Rodriguez would really fit in at Liverpool. The last thing we want is another player who does not fit the system and it will be interesting to see how this transfer shapes up.
