Liverpool’s potential club-record signing worth £85m, Darwin Nunez, scored his first home league goal two and a half months after his Premier League debut. His strike was the difference between the Reds and West Ham United on Wednesday night in what was eventually a hard-fought 1-0 win.
Nunez headed in a brilliant cross from left-back Kostas Tsimikas for the Reds to take the lead in the first half. He was a constant threat throughout the 57 minutes he was on the pitch and will certainly be more confident heading into the rest of the season.
Ever since his move to Anfield, he never really got going because of the red card he received against Crystal Palace in just his first home game for the Reds. A break in momentum appears to have caused him a great deal of harm. Before that, he scored against Manchester City in the FA Community Shield and got a goal and an assist against Fulham in our season opener at Craven Cottage.
Speaking of Nunez and issues with his early settlement, here is what Klopp said to the press (h/t Liverpool Echo):
“He’s young, he’s really young and has felt a little bit homesick, worrying and all these sorts of things so we have to make early changes, it’s fine we can do that.”
His bad start came at the same time Manchester City’s Erling Haaland had a wonderful beginning to his Premier League career, which gave rise to unwanted comparisons in the media. Moreover, Roberto Firmino in top form upfront brought down Nunez’s chance to start games.
Initially tough for him to find his feet, Darwin is doing good in the latter stages. In 12 appearances across all competitions, he has five goals and one assist. Apart from his goals, the movement to make sure he is in the right place at the right time is commendable.
Moreover, his defensive work rate which was on show even against West Ham is something that the gaffer would appreciate a lot. Hopefully, he continues this positive run he is on and we get to see more of him scoring goals.
With a newly promoted team, not doing great up next for the Reds, Nunez would like to fancy his chances against Nottingham Forest this Saturday and so will gaffer Klopp.
