Liverpool ended the UEFA Champions League Group stages with an impressive victory over group leaders Napoli with two late goals – one each from Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez.
After the poor result against Leeds United on the weekend, a huge performance was needed to form the team against an in-form Napoli side, who are sitting at top of the Serie A.
It was a game which could have gone either way however two late goals by Salah and Nunez in a very similar fashion were enough to seal the three points which would give the team a boost of confidence.
Salah, while speaking to BT Sport (h/t BBC Sport), was emphatic about the win and described it as the best feeling to be one of the most in-form teams in Europe currently. This was his seventh goal in the competition this season.
“To win against one of the best teams in the world is the best feeling. We have to carry it on, it’s a good result which will give us more confidence for in the cup and league.”
It was indeed a good result after the embarrassing 4-1 loss suffered in the reverse fixture and would give the team a much-needed boost of morale to gain momentum for the remaining games before the FIFA World Cup break.
Judging by the standards set, Salah has not been in the ideal form that is expected of him and has looked off the pace on certain occasions. A change of formation to tweak around the new personnel is also credited for the Egyptian King’s loss of form.
Salah has now scored in consecutive matches and will be looking to continue on the weekend Liverpool meet Tottenham Hotspur at N17 on the weekend. Spurs would be coming off a fiery encounter against Marseille which saw them eventually qualify for the UCL knockout stages.
Although Spurs are on a decent run, they are missing key players in Cristian Romero, Dejan Kulusevski, Richarlison and potentially Son Heung-min, who was taken off the game against Marseille with a head injury.
It provides us with the perfect opportunity to attack a vulnerable Spurs team and secure the maximum points and move closer to the top four.
