Even with Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold not in top form, his creative output is still something every team would like and he is in contention to feature at the World Cup in Qatar later this year. Especially England, who have been guilty of being too monotonous in attack at times. In such times, someone like the Scouser could add a new dynamic to the attack.
Time and time again, one would have witnessed the creativity of Trent from right-back for Liverpool. The Three Lions’ gaffer Gareth Southgate has not given the Reds’ academy graduate a proper run with the national side.
Since his debut in June 2018, Trent has only played 17 games for the Three Lions. He has a goal and four assists in these games but still, the manager prefers other defenders over the Scouser in the right-back position, wherein he has an abundance of chances.
Speaking to The Mirror, former Manchester City fullback and pundit Micah Richards says that it is crucial for Trent to start games in the World Cup later this year for England to stand a chance to win the trophy. Here is what he said:
“They start in forward positions now and are expected to create chances like wingers. Trent doesn’t only have to go – he has to play. International football is slower than the Premier League, so I think that will help him from a defensive point of view.”
“England don’t press like Liverpool. They drop off and get into shape, so that would really suit Trent.”
England, under Southgate, tends to play a certain way that gives them enough defensive stability. With that stability, Trent could thrive from the right wingback position from where he can whip those crosses in and create chances from other channels as well.
Micah’s point that International Football is much slower than the English game is also something Trent would be wary of. Counter-attacks do not break that often and the Scouser can enjoy his ahead on the right channel from where he likes to operate.
The Scouser is yet to provide an assist this season for the Reds in 12 appearances across all competitions this season. However, his two goals were extremely beautifully taken, including against Rangers from a free-kick in the UEFA Champions League.
Trent Alexander-Arnold can silence his doubters at the World Cup with good performances. Southgate is yet to announce his squad for the tournament, and hopefully, it is just a formality for him to select Trent.
