Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount‘s contract situation with his club has meant that Liverpool and Juventus sniffing around the state of affairs. The Telegraph (Subscription Required) covered the Reds’ interest in the player.
A player with Mount’s C.V. and skill level could be a one-stop-shop to Liverpool. The 23-year-old runs out of contract next summer (Transfermarkt) and the player could well and truly be on his way out of Stamford Bridge.
In 181 appearances for Chelsea across all competitions, the London-born player has 32 goals and 37 assists. Playing for England in the World Cup, started two of three group-stage games for Gareth Southgate’s side.
Former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell is of the opinion that Chelsea’s new ownership group has changed the way the club deal with contract situations and that Mount could join Liverpool or Manchester City depending on the outcome of the summer transfer window. As spoken to Football Insider (h/t The Express)
“Mount has outplayed his contract,”
“He’s won the Champions League and done very well at Chelsea. If they’re not offering the type of contract he wants, he might be tempted to try his luck somewhere else – like a Liverpool or a Man City.”
Under Thomas Tuchel, Chelsea certainly enjoyed a lot of success and won a number of trophies including the UEFA Champions League, the FIFA Club World Cup and the UEFA Super Cup as well. However, domestic titles are not a part of his trophy cabinet.
Moreover, the fact that his boyhood club is delaying contract negotiations might push him to move elsewhere where he could earn more than what he did at Chelsea, and justify his presence at the club.
At the present time, Liverpool would benefit themselves by getting a midfielder on board. A Premier League-proven player like Mount would not come their way on another occasion and hence, getting him on board makes a lot of sense.
Lastly, having Mount and a few other young midfielders on Liverpool’s books will solve the prevalent problems of an ageing squad and inconsistent performances.
But then again, it is best to be realistic when it comes to transfers such as this. It has been a rare sight seeing us sign a first-team star from a ‘big six’ club in recent years.
Mount is also a fan favourite at Chelsea and it honestly, from the outside, seems more likely that he sticks to his boyhood team rather than join Liverpool or even Manchester City. But seeing him in Liverpool red, however unlikely it may seem right now, wouldn’t be a bad sight at all.
