Former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor says he would sell Liverpool centre-back Joe Gomez

This was a strange week until now as Gabby Agbonlahor did not talk about Liverpool or any of the Reds’ players. This time, our 25-year-old centre-back Joe Gomez is in the former Villa striker’s firing line as Gabby says he would sell the player.

The player recently signed a long-term contract at the club until 2027 (Transfermarkt). Apart from playing his natural role as a centre-back, he can put in a solid shift at right-back as well. However, game-time is tough to come for the Englishman following the recruitment of Ibrahima Konate in the 2021 season.

Even this season, he has made 21 appearances across all competitions. One would have envisioned the player to have a huge future at the club after he played an instrumental role alongside Virgil van Dijk back in the 2019/20 season in helping the Reds clinch their first league title in over 30 years.

Speaking exclusively on talkSPORTEDGE via Liverpool Echo, Agbonlahor talked about how Gomez at times could be inconsistent at the Reds would need players far more consistent with their performances:

“I would sell. I think he has one good game then two bad games, he doesn’t have the form that Liverpool need.”

Gomez and the Reds

Virgil van Dijk’s current injury situation could mean that Joe gets an extended run of games wherein he should prove himself to come up in the pecking order ahead of Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate.

Moreover, his injury record has not been great and that is a segment where he could divert more attention than his performances at least this season apart from the odd game, Gomez has been pretty much decent for a backup centre-back but he would be eager to increase his role within the team in the future.

We should thank our stars that Agbonlahor is as far away as possible from a management role within the Liverpool team. Gomez is a top-class talent and inconsistencies can creep into the best of players’ games and that is certainly something he can work on.

Top-class, versatile player with his prime certainly ahead of him. Even if Agbonlahor can promise to help us sign a centre-back who can fill this criterion, we would not think about letting Gomez go.
