Journalist Rudy Galletti, while speaking to GiveMeSport (h/t Liverpool Echo) gives out three possible targets that are of interest to Liverpool, including a familiar name in Piotr Zielinski.
It is no secret that we need to reinvigorate an ageing midfield and this is a big reason for the distressed season that the club is going through. The 3-0 loss against Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday showed just how bad we are in the middle of the park.
Hence, the club is looking at targets to resolve the issue and Galetti claims Sofyan Amrabat, Mikel Merino and Piotr Zeilenski
as the three shortlisted names.“There are other names on their list including (Sofyan) Amrabat, (Mikel) Merino, and Zielinski. But especially these last two names are possible targets for the summer. In this case, the situation will be clearer in the next few days, so let’s wait.”
It is imperative to consider Galetti specifically mentioning more on Merino and Zielinski as possible targets. This is partly due to the fact that Moroccan star Amrabat is close to sealing a move to Atletico Madrid.
Although we were interested in the player following his impressive performances at the FIFA World Cup, it seems like Atletico have progressed with their interest, leaving us to look at other options.
Merino has established himself as one of the distinguished midfielders from La Liga and is an experienced figurehead in a rapidly improving Real Betis team, who are currently third in the league.
Zielinski, on the other hand, is a known character to many Liverpool supporters and not for a good reason. He played a key role in our 4-1 drubbing at the hands of Napoli in the opening UEFA Champions League Group Stage game.
An able technician, Zielinski is one of the best midfielders in Serie A and would definitely add a lot of quality to any team.
Napoli being in a title race prevents any scope of a January transfer but an approach could be made for the Polish international in the summer with his contract set to expire in June 2024(Transfermarkt).
Any of those three names would perhaps be welcomed by fans with open arms… but it really should be this month and not the summer. We can’t wait for that long, this season is close to being sacrificed.
Jordan Henderson, Fabinho Tavares and Harvey Elliott have been dismal in recent weeks and we seem to be overrun in midfield more often than not this campaign.
