According to Italian outlet Calciomercato (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are among the host of clubs interested in young Atalanta prospect Giorgio Scalvini.

Along with the Reds, German giants Borussia Dortmund and Spanish side, Atletico Madrid are also in the race. Serie A heavyweights Inter Milan and Juventus are in a tussle as well because of the various contacts they have had with the player.

Scalvini, who arrived from Brescia to the Atalanta youth setup in 2015, has made 35 appearances for the senior team, scoring three goals. He made his first-team debut last season and has been one of the regular names on the team sheet this time around.

The Italy international is a centre-back by trade who can play as a defensive midfielder too. He is right-footed and has done well to graduate up the ranks from the Atalanta youth to the senior side.

About his attributes, Scalvini reads the game well defensively, is good in physical duels against attackers and can pass out from the back without much trouble. Of course, he is still young and has a lot of room for improvement, but the player he is right now is ahead of his age (19).

It remains to be seen whether Liverpool will challenge the clubs mentioned above in the race to sign the youngster. Amidst the quality options we have at the back, there is no up-and-coming centre-back from the academy.

Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams were part of the team in the 2020/21 season, but they haven’t been in the reckoning since. So, it would make sense if the Reds invest some money on a top young defender, give him time to develop here and then hope that he becomes a very good player for us.
