According to his tweet, former Premier League and Liverpool left-back Jose Enrique believes that the Reds need up to five players to refresh their squad.
Enrique pointed out that Liverpool need at least two or three midfielders, a left-footed right winger to support Mohamed Salah and a right-back to help Trent Alexander-Arnold.
While the need for midfielders and a backup right-winger is apparent, Liverpool did sign Calvin Ramsay from Aberdeen in the preceding summer to support Alexander-Arnold. It is a shame that the Scotsman has played a total of 93 minutes
for the Reds’ senior team this season so far.So, regarding the right-back, it feels like the club may give Ramsay another season to settle down and challenge for a spot before thinking about his future.
In the past few years, Liverpool have signed a number of left-sided forwards. Be it Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota, Darwin Nunez or Cody Gakpo, all of them like to play either as a left winger or a number nine (Jota and Nunez prefer operating as a latter).
We have not signed a winger who is left-footed and can act as a backup for Salah and operate in other attacking positions too. Someone like Jarrod Bowen and Mohamed Kudus comes to mind. Both are great wingers who can operate as a number 10 too.
Recent reports suggest that Jurgen Klopp is unhappy with Salah and the club wants to sell him in the summer. Truth be told, that would be a travesty. The Egyptian is currently going through a bad patch in a team that is not playing well. Maybe, the manager needs to take more responsibility and play him centrally.
In terms of midfield, a lot has been already said. Liverpool lack legs, quality and dynamism in that department by a huge margin. Journalist Paul Joyce has confirmed the club’s interest in Matheus Nunes and Jude Bellingham, while Mason Mount has been strongly linked recently.
Enrique is not far from nailing it that Liverpool need five players. They could definitely do with four in the summer – three midfielders and a left-footed right winger. Whether all those additions are dependent on us playing in the Champions League next season, remains to be seen.
