Liverpool leading the race to sign Morocco World Cup star Sofyan Amrabat

According to Italian news outlet Calcio Mercato [h/t Liverpool Echo], the Reds lead the race to sign Fiorentina’s Moroccan midfielder Sofyan Amrabat. The 26-year-old is coming off a top-class World Cup performance on his back which has certainly increased his stock.

Alongside Liverpool, Atletico Madrid also show a lot of interest in the player. Even though Fiorentina’s CEO via The Express

spoke about how the Serie A outfit does not want to sell the player, everything has a price in the world of football and the right deal could mean Amrabat flying out of Italy.

The primarily defensive midfielder is extremely versatile as he can play central midfield as well. Amrabat has made 82 appearances across all competitions for Fiorentina and has a deal until 2024 (Transfermarkt) with the club.

Could Amrabat move to the Reds?

Fiorentina’s asking price sits at £35m for the player but the report suggests that the player will certainly not move in January. The Reds need a new addition to their midfield as the team is clearly struggling in the middle of the park this season.

Liverpool’s midfield has been a key part of their success in recent years, but it is now showing signs of wear and tear. The midfielders are not only ageing but also struggling with injuries, which is affecting the team’s performance.

Another major factor that is impacting Liverpool’s midfield is the inconsistent performances of some of the established midfielders. These players including the likes of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho, even though unfair to point only them out, are not performing at the level that is expected of them. A midfield reshuffle will also bring in more creativity and an attacking threat to the team. Liverpool is known for their attacking football and it’s not been the same this season. A rock-solid presence like Amrabat at the back could help in the transition and be rigid in defence as well.
