Tony Cascarino gives Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez ‘finishing advice’

Former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino advised Darwin Nunez that to succeed at Liverpool, he must demonstrate a higher level of effectiveness in front of the goal. The 23-year-old Uruguayan has been guilty of missing one chance too many but is still one of the best performers for the club.

In 26 appearances across all competitions, Darwin has 10 goals and three assists to his name so far. However, this number could have been much higher if the player was more clinical.

His movements on the field and the skills he exhibits when not in possession of the ball are truly exceptional. Despite the amount of hard work he has put in to consistently create goal-scoring opportunities for himself, Darwin’s actual goal production does not seem to accurately reflect the effort he has been putting in.

“Now I know Nunez has come in, and he could possibly be a really good striker. He keeps getting in one-on-one situations and blasts it. Liverpool had an incredible striker called Ian Rush, who got loads and loads of one-on-ones. He was very precise in his finishing, that is not for me Nunez at the moment.”

“He wants to blast everything – it’s great if they go in, but a lot of times it keeps hitting the ‘keeper. Now, finishing is a really difficult skill, and he’s got to learn that.”

Cascarino rightly pointed out that in front of the goal, Nunez at times can get a bit rusty by trying to smash it beyond the keeper. However, if he finds his calm in front of the goal and takes a more composed approach towards the situation, he could find himself landing much more goals than he has now.

Nunez’s improved finishing will have a positive impact on his own confidence and the confidence of the team. When a striker is regularly scoring goals, it can have a huge impact on their self-belief and their ability to perform under pressure. With the combined finishing ability of an improved Darwin and Mohamed Salah, the Reds could really take off.

With a striker who is scoring regularly, Liverpool will be in a much better position to compete for major trophies and also achieve their goals for the season and beyond as well.
