“We’re blessed”- International boss provides his reasons for snubbing Liverpool star from latest squad

Gareth Southgate cites depth for omitting Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold from the England squad

England manager Gareth Southgate has omitted Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold from the England squad due to the depth the Three Lions possess in that position.

The English gaffer has selected Manchester City’s Kyle Walker, Newcastle United captain Kieran Trippier and Chelsea full-back Reece James for the right-hand side of the defence.

Speaking to the media via Liverpool Echo, Southgate explained that it was difficult to choose between all the players. The English gaffer also suggested that form was a criterion.

“Raheem is not fit, so that’s that one, with Ben and Trent, we have three boys in at right full-backs and we have got them just ahead of those two. We’re blessed in that position with depth of talent. It is the hardest position to pick.

“It is never straightforward criteria and it is always shifting around on form. Kyle and Tripps started games at the World Cup and Reece coming back is another top player so, yes, we would love to have that depth in every position on the field really.”

Arsenal star Ben White did not make the cut either. He has been impressive for the Gunners in the current campaign as they look set to win the Premier League title. While the 25-year-old has mostly played as a right-back this season, he is a central defender by trait.

Walker has once again been a key player for City. The 32-year-old has been a regular in the England setup over the years, being capable of playing in a back three.

As for Trippier, he has been impressive since returning to England. The 32-year-old has been a key player for Newcastle as they challenge for a place in the top four in the current campaign.

James missed the 2022 World Cup after picking up an injury. He has been one of the Blues’ best players over the years. The 23-year-old is a balanced full-back, showcasing his talents in the attack as well in the defence.

Since breaking into the Liverpool first team, Trent has developed into a world-class right-back. However, this season, his defensive frailties have been on the forefront. The 24-year-old has left a lot to be desired at the back.

Jurgen Klopp’s team have not been at their best either overall. Therefore, one cannot fault Southgate for not picking Trent, considering the abundance of talent the English gaffer has at his disposal.
