Liverpool have cooled their interest in RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol due to the high asking fee

According to Football Insider (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool have taken a step back in their pursuit of RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol.

Gvardiol’s stock has risen up this season with his performances in the German league as well as an impressive World Cup campaign, where he helped his team to a third-place finish.

He has previously expressed a desire to play in the Premier League and was close to joining Chelsea before they signed Benoit Badiashile.

Liverpool have also been admirers of the player and have shown potential interest in signing the player. However, the club has chosen to take a step back due to the high fee that is touted to be demanded by Leipzig for the Croatian.

While Gvardiol, 21, would be an amazing signing for the long-term project but with limited resources in the summer window, it is crucial to use the money in areas in which there is more urgency.

A fee of £80m would be too much to spend on a defender while we have other pressing issues in the team to deal with beforehand. Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip, Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Koante can be relied upon for at least another season before a major revamp is needed.

One of the main reasons behind the falloff in the season is an ageing midfield which is in dire need of reinforcements. The midfield has to be sorted out first for us to not repeat the mistakes of this season with many top talents across Europe being linked with the club.

A good late push for a Champions League spot could do wonders for us and allow the club to attract premium talent to come to Anfield.
