Liverpool potential suitors for Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong
Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong again sees himself linked with a move to Liverpool as Spanish publication Fichajes via ECHO report that owing to the Catalan giants’ financial troubles needing them to earn revenues upto €500m, they could do away with their Dutch midfielder.
The report further states that Liverpool could look to get him on board following the drop-off in the race for Jude Bellingham. Well, they say that about every new midfielder linked with a move to Anfield over the summer.
However, there aren’t many that offer what De Jong does as he is a technically brilliant player, who is a great dribbler. His range of passing makes him a proper replacement for someone like Thiago, who is 32 now.
The 25-year-old central midfielder, mostly deployed as a deep-lying pivot at Barca, could enjoy a new role at Liverpool given the lack of advanced central midfielders at the club. In 35 appearances across all competitions this season, he has a couple of goals and an assist, all coming in the league.
FDJ to Merseyside finally?
Moreover, the possibility of Barca demanding a big cheque for the former Ajax man cannot stand ruled out. His contract with the Blaugrana expires only in 2026 (Transfermarkt).
Liverpool need new midfielders sooner than later. At the current rate, we could possibly end up outside of a top-four spot for the first time under Jurgen Klopp, and knowing what we have seen from the club under the German, it would obviously come as a huge shocker.
One would expect Klopp to revamp his current midfield options this summer as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita both look set to depart when their contracts expire.
Curtis Jones is still growing within the team although it is high time for him to deliver week in and week out. Harvey Elliott is on a learning curve, and Fabio Carvalho needs to find his way outside the gaffer’s basement.
