“Dare I say it”- Liverpool and Arsenal urged to move for 21-goal striker who has the ‘finesse of Dennis Bergkamp’

Liverpool and Arsenal urged to sign Brentford striker Ivan Toney by former Chelsea man Tony Cascarino

Former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino has urged Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United to make a move for Brentford striker Ivan Toney.

The 27-year-old striker has had a brilliant season so far, scoring 21 goals in 35 games across competitions. He seems like a complete striker who can finish, link up play and dominate aerially.

Cascarino, in his Times column (Subscription Required), wrote:

“I cannot believe Ivan Toney’s improvement technically over the past 18 months. He was one of the best players at Anfield. The Brentford striker has added all sorts of deft touches to his game, such as the clever pass that assisted Bryan Mbeumo’s disallowed goal. He has a finesse which, dare I say it, echoes that of Dennis Bergkamp.”

“Toney’s subtlety complements his stature and finishing. Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United should all consider a move.”

What should LFC do?

Cascarino is referring to Toney’s performance in Liverpool’s 1-0 Premier League win against the Bees earlier this month. He gave our defenders all kinds of problems.

Toney was confident in possession and looked like a play-making threat whenever he got the ball in space. He has become more than just a fox-in-the-box striker who plays on the shoulder of the last man.

Comparing his finesse to that of the great Dennis Bergkamp is a bit of a stretch but he certainly has made a case to be considered one of the Premier League’s most complete centre-forwards right now who is scoring goals as well.

It is common for the likes of Roberto Firmino, Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz – forwards who excel at linking up play – to not bang in the goals. But Toney is doing his bit when it comes to finishing off chances – much like Harry Kane of Tottenham Hotspur when it comes to statistics and ability this season.

The thing is we don’t really need a striker and perhaps neither do Arsenal. We have Cody Gakpo, Diogo Jota

and Darwin Nunez to play down the middle while Arsenal have Jesus, Nketiah, Leandro Trossard and on-loan Stade Reims star Folarin Balogun. A move to Chelsea and Manchester United makes way, way more sense for Toney.
