Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp lauds “calm” Caoimhin Kelleher for playing a pivotal role in tough win against adventurous Burnley

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp praised Caoimhin Kelleher for keeping his composure despite the tough battle that Burnley provided. The Reds beat Burnley 3-1 at Anfield in the Premier League clash, securing three crucial points despite facing good resistance.

The Reds retained their position at the top of the Premier League, but Manchester City have a game in hand. Grinding out such tough victories when the Reds faced injury crisis and players missing due to illness, is particularly important.

Burnley’s only goal came from a set-piece situation in the 45th minute of the game from Dara O’Shea. The clinical header towards the top-right corner had precision and power, making the attempt unsavable for Kelleher.

Burnley made some fantastic chances, particularly at the beginning of the game to put pressure on the hosts. The Clarets had four shots on target out of which David Datro Fofana had two one-on-ones against Kelleher.

The 25-year-old made fantastic saves in one-on-one situations, ensuring the Reds didn’t concede another goal. The Irishman made three crucial saves while showing his composure on the ball, distributing passes from the back.

Speaking to BBC MOTD, Klopp highlighted the calming influence of Kelleher despite facing adversities from the adventurous opponents. He said:

“Burnley gave problems and we had to score at the right moments. We needed Caoimhín Kelleher as it was a really good game for him. He was calm on the ball for us.”

The Reds’ first-choice goalkeeper Alisson Becker withdrew from the squad in the final minute due to illness. Kelleher replaced Alisson and proved why Klopp considers him the world’s best number-two, delivering important performance in need.

Klopp trusts Kelleher and uses him in cup competitions regularly, playing as the first-choice goalkeeper in the Carabao Cup. He faces the daunting task of competing with one of the best, if not the best goalkeeper in the world.
