Liverpool and Chelsea are actively pursuing the signing of RB Leipzig forward Lois Openda for the upcoming summer transfer window

Liverpool are ready to challenge Chelsea for the signature of RB Leipzig forward Lois Openda during the summer transfer window. Openda is having a prolific season, playing a key role as Leipzig attempts a top-four finish in the Bundesliga.

Standing at 1.77 metres, Openda operates in spaces instead of challenging defenders in a physical duel. Nevertheless, he has the strength to shrug off challenges, using close control and low centre of gravity to maintain possession.

The 24-year-old has a blistering pace and off-the-ball movement that makes him hard to mark and catch up. The Belgium international has the technical ability on the ball and he has shown more composure this season.

Openda has the versatility and fluidity to play across the attacking position apart from his natural centre-forward position. However, he has solely played as the main striker for Leipzig this season and his goal-scoring form proves why.

The 24-year-old has made 35 appearances in all competitions for the German side, contributing with 21 goals and four assists. Fichajes reported that Liverpool and Chelsea are showing interest in signing Openda from Leipzig during the summer to strengthen their squad.

The Reds have battled Chelsea in the previous transfer window and failed to match the astronomical price they can throw. The London club have spent more than a billion in the last two transfer windows yet continue to struggle.

Chelsea beat Liverpool with the high-priced signing of Moises Caicedo and they signed Liverpool’s long-term target Romeo Lavia. Nevertheless, both players have failed to live up to their price tag, becoming one of the many failed signings. Their compunction to pay inflated prices has put them under a potential threat of financial fair play breaches.

The Reds have a fluid and cohesive attacking department which has continued to be productive despite their injury crisis. Openda fits the profile that Liverpool prefers in an attacker but he is not a necessity for the current squad. Therefore, the 24-year-old’s potential hefty price tag could diminish any interest that the Reds have on the player.
