Joyce wrote in The Times that Hughes advised Edwards to sign Alisson Becker and Mohamed Salah for the Reds. Due to the difference in financial power and players attracting capacity between Bournemouth and Liverpool, Hughes provided insight to Edwards.

Hughes also beat Edwards to sign Lloyd Kelly in 2019, a player that Liverpool wanted to sign at the time. The Bournemouth technical director has earned a lot of respect from his football peers due to his incredible football knowledge.
