Football journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed the interest from Saudi Arabia in the struggling Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez this January window. Romano confirmed that conversations between Saudi and the Reds over the situation surrounding the Uruguayan international happened in recent weeks.
Liverpool are currently at the top of the Premier League and the Champions League table with no room for distractions. Furthermore, they are still in the Carabao Cup competition despite losing the first leg of the semi-final against Tottenham Hotspur.
The Reds have also proceeded to the FA Cup fourth round after beating League-Two’s Accrington Stanley in the last game. Liverpool’s attack have played a pivotal role during this campaign, scoring consistently against any competition under head coach Arne Slot.

However, the central forward position has provided a bit of a headache to Slot with Diogo Jota showcasing fitness unreliability. At the same time, Nunez has continued to struggle with contributions, failing to convert chances despite his overall in-field contributions.
Speaking to his viewers on the official Fabrizio Romano YouTube account, the reliable journalist confirmed the interest from Saudi for the Liverpool attacker Nunez. He said:
“What I can confirm at the moment is only that interest from Saudi in Darwin Nunez is genuine. There have been conversations to understand the situation of Darwin, the price tag and all these sorts of things. For sure there is interest. For sure, there is something in terms of contacts from Saudi, but at the moment there is not something advanced or concrete in terms of negotiations. We have to respect Liverpool in this story. Darwin is an important player for them. They spent important money on him, so before saying that Liverpool are selling Darwin Nunez, there is still plenty of things to do. At the moment, we are not at that stage. Interest yes, but at the moment still nothing advanced or concrete.”
The 25-year-old has faced constant criticism during his tenure at the club since joining from Benfica for a considerable amount. While many criticisms based on his finishing and ill-timed movements are justified, a lot are downright hate-filled and unconstructive tirades.
Furthermore, the designation of “flop” is unjust to Nunez as he has made considerable contributions since joining the Reds. Nunez has made 122 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions, scoring 37 goals and providing 21 assists apart from his overall selfless play.
The 25-year-old is not a flop but unfortunately, he is also not a hit due to the nature of his price tag. Furthermore, the expectations of wearing a number nine jersey are high due to the legendary players who wore it before Nunez.

There is a good argument that a future departure for the Uruguayan is mutually beneficial for both the player and the club. However, we are in the middle of the title race and without any justifiable incoming, losing any senior member is a disadvantage.
