Liverpool entered the last summer transfer window with just Chiesa as their sole signing, a bold move. However, they have fared well, sitting at the top of both the Premier League and Champions League. Despite their success, Jamie Carragher has urged Liverpool to sign a defender during the January transfer window.

Liverpool were held to a 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest, staying six points clear at the top of the Premier League. Despite a slow start, with Chris Wood scoring early for Forest, Liverpool bounced back after the break. A quickfire equaliser came in the 65th minute when Kostas Tsimikas’ corner set up Diogo Jota to head in. The Reds pressed for a winner, but Forest’s goalkeeper Matz Sels denied them with key saves, and Mo Salah saw his shot cleared off the line by Ola Aina.
Carragher believes Liverpool should make immediate signings
Carragher, posting on X, expressed that Liverpool deserved to win against Nottingham Forest but raised concerns over their recent defensive struggles. While the Reds continue to create chances, their early-season defensive solidity has evaporated, and they now always look vulnerable to conceding. His message was clear: “Buy a defender!!!”
The Anfield legend believes Liverpool should focus on strengthening their defence, particularly with two key players’ contracts yet to be extended.
He noted that while Liverpool had an impressive second half, creating numerous chances against a defensively strong Nottingham Forest, the inability to secure a second goal highlighted a need for defensive reinforcements.
Carragher pointed out that substitutions, like bringing on Jota and Tsimikas, were made with the intent to score, and while the team created opportunities, the Forest defence made several crucial blocks. Given these factors, Carragher insists that signing a new defender could be the right decision for Liverpool.
