Liverpool currently sit at the top of the Premier League with a comfortable eight-point lead, but Arsenal could slash it to five by defeating West Ham in the London derby. With the crucial clash against Manchester City up next, the Reds would need to secure the victory to maintain control of their title dreams. Both Paul Merson and Chris Sutton back Liverpool to make a bold statement in the title race when they take on City this Sunday.

Manchester City no longer resemble the dominant side from their treble-winning days, now sitting in a rare fourth-place position and exiting the Champions League after falling to Kylian Mbappé’s hat-trick. Meanwhile, Liverpool’s form has dipped compared to their early-season performances. Despite dropping points against Everton and Aston Villa in the past nine days, some pundits still believe Arne Slot’s side can claim their first top-flight win at the reigning champions’ home since November 2015.
Merson and Sutton believe the Reds will rip City apart
Liverpool’s recent games with Everton, Wolves, and Villa have shown that the Reds can indeed falter at situations which is not a good sight currently as the season is heading to its end. Guardiola’s team might lack its former dominance yet their 4-0 victory against Newcastle last week demonstrated their capability to perform at peak levels.
In his weekly round-up of the Premier League for Sportskeeda, Paul Merson predicted that Liverpool will win against Manchester City with little to no resistance from City. He highlighted that Liverpool are likely to run rings around City considering the pacey display Liverpool puts out, especially after the lacklustre performance City put out against Real Madrid.
Merson also stated that Liverpool winning against City would finish Arsenal’s title dreams. He sees the Reds ‘ dismantling Newcastle and Southampton, amassing 13 out of a possible 15 against some of the best rivals their league has to offer… truly showing how much of champions they are.
Meanwhile, Chris Sutton, on BBC Sport, attacked Manchester City’s performance against Real Madrid as ‘lacking belief and intensity.’ He suggested that without Erling Haaland, Guardiola’s side basically gave up at the Bernabéu with a shabby and tacky performance.
Despite Liverpool’s struggles against Villa midweek, Sutton believes Liverpool can capitalize on City’s weakness in defending.
Manchester City and Liverpool have been fierce rivals for years with City having the edge in recent seasons. However, this season sees a different narrative, with Liverpool having already defeated City in their previous clash.
As the teams prepare for yet another encounter, all eyes are on Mohamed Salah, who will be aiming to up his goal-scoring run and have a decisive impact again.
