Keane says Liverpool’s disappointments will be forgiven if they win the Premier League
Liverpool went into 2025 with four trophies up for grabs, but things have not gone to plan over the past few months.
The Reds made an early exit from the FA Cup after losing at Plymouth Argyle and came up short in the League Cup final against Newcastle United.
They were also knocked out of the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain, leaving just the Premier League title as an achievable target.
They are the overwhelming favourites with Betway after establishing an 11-point lead over Arsenal with just seven games remaining.
Former Liverpool forward Robbie Keane has tipped them to get the job done and believes the fans will forget the other disappointments if they achieve the feat.
“Getting knocked out of the Champions league and losing the League Cup final was obviously disappointing for them,” Keane said.
“But they were playing against PSG, who are a really strong side, and you have to give a lot of credit to Newcastle. I thought, man for man, they were the better team all over the park.
“They didn’t give Liverpool a second and that’s probably the poorest Liverpool have played this season.
“From the start, you could see how much it meant to the Newcastle players and fans. It’s such a unique football club and the fans deserve a bit of success.
“If Liverpool win the league, I think everything will be forgiven. It would be special to win it with the fans there as well, because the last time was during lockdown.”
Liverpool’s bid to win the title this season has been slightly overshadowed by speculation surrounding the futures of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
The trio are out of contract this summer and have been heavily linked with moves elsewhere. However, the club has moved closer to agreeing news deals with Salah and Van Dijk.
It is a different story where Alexander-Arnold is concerned, with the full-back seemingly intent on joining Real Madrid on a free transfer this summer.
The proposed move has angered some Liverpool fans, who believe the academy graduate has disrespected the club by allowing his contract to run down.
Keane has considerable experience of playing abroad, having left Coventry City for Inter Milan for £13 million in July 2000.
His move to Serie A quickly turned sour, and he was loaned to Leeds United in December 2000 before making the switch permanent the following May.
Keane admits that the transfer to Italy came too soon in his career and believes Alexander-Arnold will have no trouble adapting to the demands of playing overseas.
“I went to Inter when I was only 20 years of age, so it was a little bit different for me,” Keane added. “I was probably too young at the time, having played one year in the Premier League and two years in the Championship.
“I was still a young kid, and I probably should have gone a little bit later. I think Trent, at his age, would be completely fine. He has played for a number of years and he’s at a perfect age to go. Players settle in fairly quickly nowadays.
“When I went to Italy only Clarence Seedorf and Christian Vieri spoke English, and that was challenging. Nowadays everybody speaks English, so even for myself at the two clubs I’ve managed abroad, it’s basically English speaking.”
