Liverpool’s game against Southampton could see the Merseyside club losing out on the services of one of their best players this season. Adam Lallana was taken off in the international game between England and Spain.
The England attacker was substituted after the half an hour mark when he picked up an injury post a tackle from Bayern Munich’s Thiago Alcantara. Lallana did open the scoring for the Three Lions but his loss certainly was a big miss for Gareth Southgate, the interim England manager. As quoted by Mirror, Southgate said:
“He’s being assessed by the medical team at the moment,” said Southgate after the game.
“It was a great shame because I have really enjoyed working with Adam.
“He’s an intelligent footballer, a very talented footballer, who is now starting to add goals to his game for England. He was quite key to how we wanted to play tonight.”
Even though Lallana was substituted after the half hour mark, there still are some slight hopes that he could end up playing against his former employers at the weekend – a very little though.
There are reports that suggested Lallana had given the thumbs up as he came off the pitch. His substitution could have been a precautionary measure taken by the England side as this match was just a friendly, but Daily Mail recently reported that Lallana is set to miss a reunion with Southampton on Saturday.
The Liverpool star will be assessed by the Premier League side as well and fans will hope that the Englishman does play in the upcoming game. The 28-year-old has been incredible this campaign and his impact on the Liverpool team has been second to none.
The former Southampton star has scored three goals in the Premier League and also has five assists to his name. His understanding with the attacking trio of Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Philippe Coutinho has seen the side storm to the top of the league.
The Liverpool attack has scored 30 goals in just 11 games this season in the Premier League and Lallana deserves a lot of credit for it. His influence in the side has been so great that when he has not played, the Reds look toothless in their midfield.
The former Southampton man has been the driving force in the midfield containing Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum and if the 28-year-old does not start for the Merseyside club, they could be in real trouble against a good Southampton side.
