Real Madrid star Sergio Ramos didn’t endear himself to many Liverpool fans after his antics in the Champions League final in 2018.
The Spaniard hauled Mohamed Salah down as the Egyptian left the clash with a shoulder injury, and the defender also hit Loris Karius during the game.
Madrid lifted the title after defeating Liverpool thanks to Gareth Bale, but we won the title last season thanks to a great team effort.
Virgil van Dijk led from the back as we were incredible in the defence and won the UEFA Best Player of the Year and Best Defender of the Year award recently.
The Dutch defender also picked up several other individual honours recently and Ramos has backed Van Dijk to land the Ballon d’Or.
The Real Madrid star was speaking during the launch of an Amazon Prime documentary and was quoted by Marca saying (h/t Evening Standard
):“If Van Dijk wins it, it will be on sufficient merit.
“Great defender.”
The centre-back added that it was difficult for a defender to win the prize and players other than Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are getting chances to land the big prize.
The former Southampton star has been excellent since he joined the Reds, and it comes as no surprise that he is one of the favourites to land the Ballon d’Or.
The 28-year-old has also been in great form for the national side and has captained them to some great wins over the past 18 months.
Van Dijk is possibly the best defender in the world and helping us land the Champions League should be enough to see him win the Ballon d’Or too.
