Good news for the fans as Liverpool escape Carabao Cup expulsion with £200,000 fine

Liverpool fined £200,000 for fielding ineligible player against MK Dons

Liverpool have been handed a £200,000 fine after playing Pedro Chirivella against MK Dons in the Carabao Cup by the EFL (h/t BBC).

The Spaniard came on to replace Naby Keita in the second half, with Liverpool winning the clash 2-0.

The Reds put up a professional performance at Stadium MK and won via goals from James Milner and Ki-Jana Hoever.

Pedro Chirivella during pre-season

However, Chirivella didn’t have international clearance for the Reds and Liverpool could have been expelled from the competition.

The EFL said that it wasn’t “appropriate” to expel the Premier League leaders from the competition and that £100,000 of the fine would be suspended until next season (h/t BBC):

“The club’s breach was in part due to the challenges it encountered with securing the correct international clearance, and its subsequent ability to include the player on team sheets despite the lack of clearance.

“As a result the board concluded the most appropriate sanction was a financial penalty.”

Liverpool prepare for a big fourth round clash

The Reds also highlighted there were other factors that saw Chirivella play but apologised to the tournament organisers, governing body and MK Dons too.

We host Arsenal in the next round of the competition, and it will be interesting to see if we field another youthful side.

Most of the youngsters impressed at Stadium MK, with Harvey Elliott, Curtis Jones and Hoever starring for the Reds.

The Carabao Cup might be a distraction that we don’t need in hunt of the bigger trophies. However, we can blood some young talents via this competition this season.
