Former Liverpool attacker Harry Kewell wants more competition for the front three and believes Antoine Griezmann would have been excellent for the Reds.
The Australian won the Champions League with us in 2005 and was speaking on the Debate, regarding Liverpool’s attack.
Kewell claimed he didn’t have a problem with Divock Origi but wanted more competition at Anfield (h/t Sky Sports):
“Personally, I feel Liverpool need another striker. I know it sounds crazy because the front three are amazing, but I think they need another one to test the top three.
“I’ve got nothing against Divock Origi – and I think he’s a fantastic player and does his part. But I would love to see someone challenge their front three to really keep them on their game.”
The former Leeds United star added that Sadio Mane was on fire but Mohamed Salah hasn’t been at his best.
Roberto Firmino worked a lot for the side but Kewell highlighted the lack of goals from the Brazilian.
Griezmann, for his part, joined Barcelona in the summer but has struggled. The World Cup winner has four goals and three assists this season but Kewell highlighted how the Frenchman would have been the ideal signing for the Reds.
“I would love to have seen [Antoine] Griezmann there. I think he’s fantastic and is their type of player. The option of competing to get into a top team, challenging for titles, would have been the incentive.”
The lack of summer recruits was always going to raise eyebrows and not replacing Daniel Sturridge could hurt us.
However, Xherdan Shaqiri has been injured for most of the season and the Swiss star could do a job once he returns.
The Reds did look bereft of ideas without Salah at Manchester United. Origi started that game but just didn’t do enough. Rhian Brewster and Harvey Elliott have impressed this season but they might be too young to start first-team games.
Liverpool could do with a world-class star joining us and pushing the front three for starting places, and it will be interesting to see if we make moves in the winter window.
