Report – Key Liverpool clash could be played at neutral venue

St. Mary’s could host the Merseyside Derby next Sunday

According to the Athletic, the Merseyside Derby between Liverpool and Everton to be held next Sunday could be shifted to Southampton.

It all depends or not if Goodison Park receives the necessary safety certificate for the match to go ahead.

Wembley, the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and Leicester’s King Power Stadium are also potential neutral venues for the clash.

According to the report, the above grounds could all be used if any of the 92 rescheduled fixtures have to be moved due to health and safety concerns at a club’s regular home stadium.

It is part of a set of six games recommended by the police that should be played at alternate venues. Others include Manchester City vs Liverpool, Manchester City vs Newcastle United, Manchester United vs Sheffield United, Newcastle vs Liverpool, and any other game that can see us clinch the title. Logistics are a major factor in the decision to select an alternative venue. It is believed to be easier and safer for the Liverpool and Everton squads to fly to Southampton rather than drive to Leicester or travel by train to London.

The chances of it taking place at Goodison looked likely after the Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson gave the fixture his backing.

Despite the Mayor and Merseyside Police’s willingness to organize the game in the city, concerns remain.

There lies a possibility that the authorities may delay a decision depending on the significance of the game. If Manchester City defeat Arsenal, the Reds will not be able to clinch the title against the Blues.

The Merseyside derby is one of the hotly contested matches in English football. It will be a memorable moment if we win the title against our arch-rivals. Liverpool fans will not mind where the title is won, as long as it’s done.
