Georginio Wijnaldum rejects Liverpool contract offer

Liverpool’s decision to bring in Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich is a move that has been received with massive plaudits. The Spanish playmaker is among the most composed and celebrated football players in the world at this time. And acquiring him has to be considered quite the coup.

Despite all the amazing quality that he does bring to the table, one player who is seemingly unhappy with the former Barcelona man’s arrival is Dutch midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum according to a report by Football Insider. (h/t Mirror)

La Liga giants Barcelona have been keen on signing the Dutchman since the start of the summer. Despite some heavy links over the last month, no deal has taken shape just yet. Various contradicting reports have come and gone, but the latest one claims that the former Newcastle United has rejected the Reds’ latest contract offer. (h/t Mirror)

What this means is that he would be able to walk away for free at the end of the season.

Liverpool already had multiple midfield options to choose from. And the addition of Thiago is likely to reduce the amount of playing time that Wijnaldum gets. Although he did start the fixture against Chelsea last weekend, Thiago’s introduction at half-time was a clear indicator of the trend that’s set to follow.

With just a year remaining on his current contract at the club, the player could be tempted to simply see it out before choosing an alternate destination.

Barcelona’s desire to acquire the midfielder is mostly down to the appointment of new manager – Ronald Koeman. The former Netherlands head coach has a history of working with Wijnaldum, and seemingly sees the Dutchman as an important puzzle piece for his Barcelona project. (h/t Mirror)

Whether or not they actually make a bid remains to be seen. But as things stand, it does look like Wijnaldum is going to stay at Anfield for the remainder of the 20/21 Premier League season. However, it remains to be seen where his future lies beyond that.
