Speaking in an interview with BettingOdds (h/t Mirror), Liverpool legend John Barnes has advised the club to go after Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembele as the Reds look set to miss out on Jadon Sancho.
Fabrizio Romano revealed last week that Manchester United had established contact with Sancho over a summer move, with Liverpool yet to make a move for the Borussia Dortmund sensation.
Amidst that speculation, Liverpool icon Barnes has claimed that the England international would be a better fit at Manchester United and has advised Liverpool to go after Barcelona speedster Ousmane Dembele instead.
“As far as Jadon Sancho is concerned, out of the clubs interested in him I’d say that Manchester United is probably the best destination for him. At Liverpool, I’d prefer a much more direct player. Jadon is very skilful and very tricky, but I believe that Ousmane Dembele would suit Liverpool out of all the potentially available players in that position.”
Dembele signed for Barcelona in 2017, the same summer in which Sancho moved to Dortmund. While the Frenchman has shown glimpses of his unbridled talent, he has been bogged down by injuries and fitness issues throughout his stint at Camp Nou.
Nevertheless, the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner is coming on the back of a decent season with the Catalans, having managed to stay fit for a large course of the campaign and finishing with 11 goals and 5 assists in 44 games
.Dembele is entering the final year of his contract with Barcelona and should Liverpool do decide to make a move, could cost lesser than the €90-
€95million that Dortmund want for Sancho.A new forward would be a good addition at Anfield considering how Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane had an underwhelming 2020/21 campaign. In addition, Mane and Mo Salah will be away for the AFCON next year, which could hurt Liverpool as well. Whether they heed Barnes’ advice and move for Dembele remains to be seen.
