Four Premier League clubs contact Liverpool for Nat Phillips

According to The Athletic [subscription required], Liverpool defender Nat Phillips is a man in demand with four Premier League sides interested in his services.

The Likes of Newcastle United, Burnley, Brighton and Southampton have set their eyes on the player. All four clubs have contacted Liverpool for the possibility of signing the 24-year-old. However, the Reds won’t sell until a suitable offer arrives.

Should Phillips leave?

The move could suit the player. Last season, Phillips played an important role after injures to Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez. He played his part in helping Liverpool secure the Champions League slot. The Englishman was named Liverpool’s Player of the Month for March, which was a crucial period for Jurgen Klopp’s side.

However, all first-team defenders are expected to be match fit this season. This could result in less game time for Phillips. The player is still just 24 years old. One would assume that first-team football at any of the above clubs reported would benefit him.

Do Liverpool need Phillips?

The likes of Van Dijk, Gomez and Joel Matip are all back fit. All three have played in pre-season games. On top of that, the club have also signed Ibrahima Konate. All of the above mentioned would be ahead of Nat Phillips in the pecking order.

Hence, the club could afford to lose Phillips. A sale could also help the club fund new arrivals. Michael Edwards is known for getting good deals for his players.

However, it could also come down to whether Van Dijk and Gomez can hit the ground running after such lengthy layoffs. Hence, it would not be a surprise if Liverpool do end up keeping Phillips beyond the summer window.
