Liverpool ‘looked at’ 26-year-old English midfield star during the summer

Transfer News: James Ward-Prowse was considered by Liverpool during the summer

According to Goal (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool considered a transfer move for Southampton midfielder, James Ward-Prowse, during the summer window.

The Saints star signed a new contract at the club last month to put an end to speculations. But the report mentions that he was ‘looked at’ by the Reds at one point in time.

The transfer window was not the most happening for Liverpool supporters. The club lost a couple of important senior players in Georginio Wijnaldum and Xherdan Shaqiri – both of whom went to Ligue 1.

The Reds did sign Ibrahima Konate earlier in the summer, but that was as good as it was going to get for the fans. With the club’s fitness issues last season, a new midfielder would have helped Jurgen Klopp during this campaign.

A number of options were supposedly looked at. Yves Bissouma of Brighton and Hove Albion was one of the names, while the Reds were also linked with Renato Sanches in recent months.

As it turns out, the Reds did not bring in another name on deadline day. Ward-Prowse could have been a neat little addition to the squad, especially when his set-piece abilities are considered.

And it’s not like he would have been the first player to make the trip from St. Mary’s to Anfield in recent years. Sadio Mane, Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana, and Virgil van Dijk are just some of the ex-Saints players that were signed by the Reds.

But as it turns out, Ward-Prowse is all set to stay at Southampton, at least until the end of this year.
