“He could have passed”- Ex-PL ace gives his verdict on the relationship between two Liverpool superstars

Arsenal legend Ian Wright gives his thoughts on Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and their current relationship at Liverpool

Talking to Premier League Productions (h/t Liverpool Echo), Ian Wright has said that Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane have set aside their differences and worked on improving their relationship on the field for the greater good of the team. He said:

“When I watch them now, you can always tell with the strikers if they celebrate with each other. If they celebrate with each other, then you know that it is fine”.

Liverpool have had a phenomenal start to their season with 15 points in the Premier League, only topped by Chelsea with 16. They are also the leaders of their group in the Champions League having won all their games so far.

Much of their success is due to the outstanding form of the African duo up front, with a combined goal involvement of 17 across all competitions. Their combination was crucial in their game against Manchester City where Salah set up Mane for the opening goal.

Mo Mane, More Problems

Back in August 2019, during Liverpool’s 3-0 away win to Burnley, there was an isolated incident where the Egyptian decided not to pass to his Senegalese teammate and ended up losing the ball while trying to take a shot. Mane was furious as he was free and Salah should have opted to pass the ball instead.

However, it is also understandable why Salah took on the shot as they were leading 3-0 at this point. And as a forward, one always looks to get on the scoresheet and Salah cannot be blamed for it.

Even though Jurgen Klopp immediately downplayed that incident, pundits questioned their chemistry on the pitch and suggested that they were putting individual accolades over the interest of the team.

Ian Wright has dismissed the idea that Salah is selfish and has said that a forward is bound to have some form of “selfishness”. He continued in his talk to Premier League Productions (h/t Liverpool Echo):

“Mo says he is a winger but then he does show traits of being a striker. There are times where I see that he could have passed, but I say to myself ‘I wouldn’t have passed that”.
