According to the Independent, Real Madrid have approached Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards to take over the executive role at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Edwards has been a critical figure in the Liverpool board due to his incredible success in recruitment. The 42-year-old has been involved in the signing of some of Liverpool’s best current players who are writing history at Anfield.
The signings of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Virgil van Dijk etc, is the work of the visionary executive. However, his time with Jurgen Klopp’s team is coming to an end.
Edwards recently announced that he is ending the 11-year long partnership and would step down from his post at Liverpool at the end of the current season.
Premier League club Newcastle United previously attempted to sign the experienced director; however, the Magpies’ offer was turned down by Edwards.
Now it is believed that Real Madrid have shown interest to sign the Liverpool director. The Los Blancos have already approached the 42-year-old and are confident that they can lure him to Bernabeu.
Michael Edwards compleated some of the most important deals in Liverpool history. Under his regime, the Reds were known to be the English club that spotted several talents before being a superstar. In such a way, despite spending less, Jurgen Klopp’s team possessed the calibre to take over European elites in football’s biggest stages.
Salah was signed for £36.9m; Mane costed £34m. The total of these two players doesn’t cross £89million, which is the amount Real Madrid paid for Eden Hazard in 2019.
Van Dijk came a little expensive; however, with his incredible performance in the back that helped Liverpool acquire two of the biggest titles that the Kopites long-awaited, he has proved why he cost that much.
Michael Edwards’ departure would surely hurt Liverpool. But, it’s even worse to think that the Reds would be handing over an expert in the field to a rival whom Jurgen Klopp’ steam might have to face in the Champions League.
