According to Inside Futbol and Voetbal International (h/t Liverpool Echo), two English giants, namely Liverpool and Manchester City have both held talks with 22-year-old PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo.
The Dutchman has been impressive for the Dutch giants this season and could be ready to take the next step in his career. The exciting young winger is enjoying a fine season in the Netherlands, scoring 16 goals and assisting 15 more in 37 matches so far.
Despite having signed a new contract with the Eredivisie giants, there is a feeling that Gakpo might not stay in the Dutch league for long considering the offers that he is getting from around Europe.
A product of the PSV youth system, the 22-year-old winger has already won four senior caps for the Dutch national team. There is no doubting his prodigious talent and it comes as no surprise that Liverpool are keeping a close eye on his development.
While there is no doubting Gakpo’s potential, the Premier League is a completely different ball game from the Eredivisie and it remains to be seen if the PSV winger can produce a similar output in England.
The Reds have been heavily linked with a move for the Dutch winger for some time now but they will not be alone in their interest considering that other giants like Manchester City are also showing interest.
Having just signed Luis Diaz, there is no dearth of options at left-wing. Although the 22-year-old can play through the right and the middle, it seems very unlikely that Gakpo could get regular playing time for the Reds.
Gakpo could be tempted to come to Anfield and work under Jurgen Klopp. However, it could cost him valuable game time at least from the word go. It seems best for the Dutchman to continue developing at PSV and making the move at a time when he has a better chance of breaking into Liverpool’s stacked frontline.
