Liverpool star to be offered new contract to ward off PSG interest

Liverpool have offered Naby Keita a new contract in an attempt to see off PSG interest

According to the Athletic, Liverpool want to bind Naby Keita to a new contract despite a lack of game time to see off transfer interest from PSG.

After making his £50million move from RB Leipzig, when Naby Keita inherited the famous number 8 shirt of Liverpool famously worn by Steven Gerrard, the fans expected him to live up to the hype. However, the Guinean has failed to be a consistent performer as Jurgen Klopp has mostly favoured Thiago, Fabinho and Jordan Henderson over him.

Given Keita’s contract is set to end next year, PSG is interested

in signing the midfielder. PSG’s incoming sporting director, Luis Campos believes the player can be a successful replacement for Gini Wijnaldum who has failed to live up to the expectations in the French capital.

However, Liverpool doesn’t want to give away Keita that easily. Jurgen Klopp wants to keep hold of him as the manager has plans that include the 27-year-old. In order to see off the PSG interest, they are believed to be eyeing to bind him to a new contract soon.

Should Liverpool keep Keita?

Keita has scored only four goals and given three assists in 40 appearances across all competitions in the last term, which is a mere disappointing spell considering the amount Liverpool paid for him. The Guinean was able to bring his form to the ground on some occasions the last term, but his spell was hampered by injuries and lack of game time.

However, considering Liverpool have an ageing midfield, Keita might be more suited to play the role of a backup midfielder than any other new arrivals. The club would go through a transition phase some point down in the line and the Guinean midfielder’s availability might help the process run smoothly.

On top of that Keita’s dropping form means that Liverpool wouldn’t be able to get the full amount that they paid in 2018. It wouldn’t be advantageous to take a financial loss in the 27-year-old star’s sale because the Reds have to sign a reinforcement which wouldn’t come much cheaper.

Hence Liverpool should do everything in their hand to keep Keita at the club. He has shown the spark to be a top-class midfielder and might be able to rejuvenate his form in the next season. As Jurgen Klopp has faith in the player, he might get more chances to play if he stays.
