Influential Liverpool star honoured in Queen’s Jubilee Year honours’ list

Liverpool star James Milner awarded MBE alongside Rio Ferdinand and Gareth Bale in Queen’s Jubilee Year honours list

According to Liverpool Echo, Liverpool icon James Milner has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Jubilee Year honours list for his contribution to football and charity.

The Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) is the third-highest ranking Order of the British Empire award and is awarded to a person for making a positive impact in their line of work, as per the BBC.

His playing career has spanned over 20 years, where he has represented teams such as Leeds United, Newcastle United, Manchester City, and of course, Liverpool. He was also a regular for the England national team between 2009 and 2016.

Milner moved to Merseyside in 2015 from the Etihad, and that move has gone down pretty well. Shortly after Milner’s move to Anfield, Jurgen Klopp took over, and the two have since enjoyed a massive amount of success together.

He has won the Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup multiple times while also reaching three UEFA Champions League finals with the Reds- winning one. A true legend of the game, his contribution off the field is impressive too.

Milner recognised by the Royal Family

The former Aston Villa man set up the James Milner Foundation to promote ‘healthy recreation for young people in the UK’- a charity that has raised over £1million for various causes since its inception.

Gareth Bale and Rio Ferdinand are two other football-specific figures on the list. Milner’s inclusion is more than deserved but the question continues to stand if he will stay with LFC past this summer.

His contract expires in a few weeks’ time, with the player yet to pen a new deal. Now 36, he has accepted his role as someone who gets a few minutes every now and then but his voice continues to be an important one in the dressing room.

There is no need to see him as a regular first-team player anymore. But the club must realise that his experience and leadership skills would have a huge impact on some of the younger players.

A short-term contract, thus, would not really disappoint Liverpool fans. However, it remains to be seen if FSG and co. share the same viewpoint regarding this.
