Ex-Liverpool player ‘tipped’ for a surprising return to Anfield

Former Liverpool star Georginio Wijnaldum linked with a return to Anfield

According to The Irish Daily Star via Paisly Gates (h/t Liverpool Echo), there are ‘whispers’ that Liverpool are looking at a loan move for former star Georginio Wijnaldum. The Merseyside club are ‘tipped’ to complete a loan move for the player who’s currently at PSG.

The Dutchman was rarely featured by the French champions as Paris Saint-Germain won the Ligue 1 title comfortably. He made a move to Paris last summer as a free agent but has had a torrid time, being labelled Ligue 1’s ‘flop signing’ of the season.

Any move for the midfielder would come as a shock as the 31-year-old would only be a stop-gap solution for the Reds. It makes little sense for a player who did not admittedly do himself any favours after leaving the club.

Wijnaldum has been tipped for a shock return to Liverpool.

Wijnaldum to Liverpool a win-win?

Liverpool’s summer midfield target, Aurelien Tchouameni, decided to join Real Madrid this summer. And according to club sources via The Liverpool Echo, the Reds won’t sign any new players this summer.

Wijnaldum’s time at PSG has been dissapointing. He probably would have hoped for more game time at the French club as he completed 90 minutes only seven times in 38 outings. The Parisians won the title but fell short once again in the Champions League.

As the World Cup draws near, the Dutchman will look to stay sharp with more game time. Liverpool could offer him a temporary fix and Wijnaldum could possibly be a short-term fix for the Reds midfield.

The 31-year-old’s tipped arrival on loan will give Jurgen Klopp that extra man in the midfield to give the likes of Thiago Alcantara, Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and Naby Keita the rest they need. James Milner, along with youngsters Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones are also options but the quality and experience of Wijnaldum could possibly strengthen our squad depth.

The midfielder helped the Reds lift major titles in his 5-year stint at the club before leaving for PSG last summer as a free agent.

The Dutchman is familiar with the city and the club. He won’t need time to fit into the team and Klopp’s system. If the ‘whispers’ are to be believed, a loan move could possibly be beneficial for both club and player.
