Liverpool icon and former Real Madrid wideman Steve McManaman believes the Reds don’t need to make any more signings this summer transfer window. The former attacking player told horserracing.net (h/t Liverpool Echo) that he doesn’t think there’s enough space in the team to fit more bodies
“I don’t believe Liverpool need to make more signings this summer. Where would you put them? They’ve made three signings already this summer.”
With the addition of Darwin Nunez, Fabio Carvalho and Calvin Ramsay, the 50-year-old believes that new additions could only be incorporated this summer if some players were to leave Anfield.
“The only way they could potentially go for somebody else is if five or so players leave this summer.”
While Sadio Mane has already completed a move to Bayern Munich, Takumi Minamino is also close to joining Monaco. There is also speculation regarding the futures of Neco Williams and Nat Phillips.
The Anfield legend also said that he could see Liverpool selling some players to recoup the money they’ve spent this summer.
While McManaman is right about the squad having too many players, it’s important to remember that other teams around us like Chelsea and Manchester City could strengthen their squads even further this summer.
It would be brazen to think Liverpool couldn’t do with more signings. While we might not need squad players to make up the numbers, a quality addition in the midfield could prove essential.
Fabinho, Thiago and Jordan Henderson need someone that can cover for them in the squad. We don’t have a natural replacement for our defensive midfielder.
While the versatility of James Milner is crucial, it wouldn’t be prudent to count on the 36-year-old to be a game-changer. Naby Keita is another option but hasn’t been consistent enough in his time at Anfield.
Harvey Elliott recently returned from his injury and it’ll be interesting to see whether he’ll be able to show the same form he exhibited at the beginning of last season. Curtis Jones is a decent option to have but like Elliott, he’s still young.
Also, with the departure of Mane, it remains to be seen whether Darwin Nunez can step up to the plate and fill the void left by the Sengalese. The Uruguayan turned 23 just yesterday and as good as he might be, he could take a little time to adjust to new surroundings in England.
