Takumi Minamino has completed a move to AS Monaco from Liverpool, with Philippe Clement apparently confirming the deal with his comments, as relayed by Fabrizio Romano on Twitter.
The manager of the French side admitted that Minamino was a ‘priority’ for them after a deal worth €15million plus €3million in add-ons has been agreed on between the two clubs.
“We’re really happy, he was our priority.”
The path to regular first-team football at Liverpool was filled with obstacles for Minamino. And another Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez-shaped hurdle from next season could have meant even more time on the bench for the Japanese star.
Minamino was a big reason why the Reds did not finish trophyless last season. His goals in the FA Cup and EFL Cup were crucial to our success.
Divock Origi and now Taki Minamino have left the club and it is a bigger loss than what our fans think it is. These two were our weapons off the bench, with the Belgian making himself count on big occasions while the ex-RB Salzburg star doing the job for us in cups.
Darwin Nunez has come in but he is effectively a replacement for Sadio Mane, who is now at Bayern Munich. The Reds have, in essence, weakened their depth up front this summer.
Minamino, back in 2020, considered that he was undeserving of the Premier League medal. That emotion sums up his time with us.
He was doing a good job for us whenever he was called upon by Klopp- but there lay the problem. He wasn’t called upon by Klopp in games that the German thought really mattered for the club.
There were many games where our frontline was struggling for goals last season and Taki was either not on the bench or an unused substitute. He deserves better than such treatment and hopefully, in Clement, he has a manager that isn’t afraid to count on him on the big occasions.
