“Go on loan”- Liverpool defender admits he is open to a temporary transfer move

Rhys Williams claims he is ready for whatever role awaits him at Liverpool next season

Speaking to the club’s website

, Liverpool centre-back Rhys Williams opened up about his aspirations and future role at Anfield. The 21-year-old is ready for any challenge up ahead, whether it’s within the team or out on loan.

“For me, it’s important so I’m ready for whatever the gaffer wants me to do. If it’s to be around the team again, as I was in the second half of last season, or if it’s to go on loan – whatever challenges face me this year I just need to be ready for.”

Williams isn’t fussed about not getting many opportunities and wants to remain ready for whenever he’s needed on the pitch. The 21-year-old keeps the team ahead of the individual and is up for the challenge when he can get the chance.

“There were times that I was on the bench last season and I could have been needed. So, I always have to keep my head on whenever I’m going to be needed and just make sure I can provide what the gaffer needs.”

As the Merseyside club goes off to pre-season, players like Williams who don’t get as many moments during the regular season will get the opportunity to impress Jurgen Klopp and make a place in the German manager’s plans for the upcoming season.

“You get to experience different things and places that we probably wouldn’t normally go if we were just off on off-season. It’s always good to go and experience these things.

Williams had a hard time last season

Williams went out on loan at the start of last season but came back to the Anfield side after a disappointing spell with Swansea, where the Preston-born defender featured in just seven games.

After cutting short his loan spell, the 21-year-old occasionally sat on the Liverpool bench but mostly played with the U23 side. The defender has featured 19 times for the Reds’ senior side, with all of his appearances coming in the 2020/21 season.

Williams and Nat Phillips created a formidable partnership a couple of seasons back when Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez were all out injured. The two young centre-backs managed to hold their own and helped the Merseyside club to a top-four finish.

Fans will forever remember the 21-year-old’s contribution in that season, making Champions League football when it seemed difficult. But opportunities were limited last season with our defenders back to full fitness and the addition of Ibrahima Konate.

Liverpool supporters will feel a move away to a side that can guarantee first-team football will be best for Williams’ future– on a temporary basis.

He has served us well when we needed him the most and fans wouldn’t forget him for that. While they would love to see him succeed, there is an understanding that he isn’t quite there yet to rub shoulders with our current first-choice options.
