According to journalist Alan Nixon (h/t Mirror), Championship outfit Blackburn Rovers are still keen to attain the services of Liverpool youngster Sepp van den Berg on a loan deal.
Burnley and Bournemouth were also interested in his services but Blackburn have moved ahead of the queue by offering the player guaranteed minutes. With Liverpool keen to add more experience to the defender’s game, it is a tempting proposition.
There is an injury crisis going on with two first-team defenders in Ibrahima Konate and Joel Matip sidelined for the immediate future while Joe Gomez has just returned from an injury. However, with Nat Philips also present, it will be tough for the Dutch defender to feature regularly for Liverpool this season.
Sepp Van den Berg was signed by Eredivisie minnows PEC Zwolle in 2019 as a part of Liverpool’s strategy of acquiring talent for the future. A tall defender with an ability to play from the back, he is touted to be a mainstay in the first team in the coming years.
The defender spent last season on loan at Preston North End where he was highly impressive and played the most amount of minutes than any other outfield player at the club. He made a total of 50 appearances
and scored two goals and made one assist.A move to Blackburn will hand the young Dutchman the opportunity to experience regular football. That should help the player continue his development and build upon the promise he showed last season.
Staying on at Anfield is unlikely to get Van den Berg enough opportunities this season. While the club’s stance on having enough depth is understandable, it could prove detrimental in the long run.
