Speaking to the club’s official website after Liverpool defeated Rangers in the UEFA Champions League, skipper Jordan Henderson talked positively about teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold. The right-back, coming into the game, was subject to a lot of stick online due to his “below-average defensive abilities”.
In what was a comprehensive win, wherein Liverpool did not face major difficulties, Trent put in a brilliant game at right-back. He was the first goalscorer for Liverpool, slotting a freekick past a hapless Allan McGregor.Mohamed Salah scored from the penalty early in the second 45 to seal the deal for the Reds.
Moreover, apart from scoring from the free kick, the Liverpool academy graduate was a solid shout at the back as well, rightly implied by the skipper.
“Obviously everyone will speak about the free-kick – an excellent free-kick – but I thought overall tonight he was really good defensively. He’s done the basics really well and made some really good passes, defensively I thought he was solid, which is important for us. I thought his performance was really good.”
The right-back, coming into the game was not in form and was subject to scrutiny from many pundits and fans via social media. The 3-3 draw to Brighton was not the best of games for Trent either as he failed to perform over the course of the 90 minutes.
The performance against Rangers came at just the right moment for him and gave him a reason to build upon for the remainder of the campaign. Moreover, praise coming in from the skipper should give him a sense of self-assurance and inspire his morale.
Speaking of the game though, defensively, Trent won 75% of his tackles and made 11 recoveries in the game as per FotMob stats. Moreover, his free-kick goal has been shortlisted for the Champions League Goal of the Week.
With a game against in-form Arsenal this weekend, Trent would be hoping to put in a good game against Mikel Arteta’s men. Doing so will see him not just silence Gabriel Martinelli but also his detractors.
