Manchester United close to agreeing a deal with former Liverpool backroom icon

Manchester United are closing in to add former Liverpool transfer guru Micheal Edwards to their backroom staff

In a piece of rather shocking news to Liverpool fans according to Football Insider (h/t Liverpool Echo), the club’s former sporting director and transfer market guru Micheal Edwards is close to agreeing on a deal to join arch-rivals Manchester United.

Edwards, who joined the Merseyside club as an analyst made his name when he was shifted to the recruitment team and was influential in the crucial transfers of Virgil van Dijk, Alisson Becker, Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson which have proved to be stalwarts of the team under Jurgen Klopp.

Edwards announced his departure from Liverpool at the end of his expiry contract in June 2022 with an aim to give more time to his personal life.

It was speculated that Edwards turned down approaches from major clubs including a concrete one from Chelsea’s new owner Todd Boehly however it seems like our arch-rivals have seen a breakthrough.

Manchester United have been looking for a director of football for the longest time and last season it felt that German Ralf Rangnick would take up the role once his interim period as a manager ends.

However, such was the dismal six months under the German that the club chose to part ways with Rangnick, who took up the job of Austrian national team head coach.

We all are aware of the capabilities that Edwards possesses and if the deal comes through, it would instantly make United a major threat going forward considering his eye for talent and the club’s huge financial resources to back it.

Sporting Director Michael Edwards has been replaced by Julian Ward at Liverpool.

It would also be a bite to the Liverpool faithful who believed in a chance of a reunion with the former sporting director once his sabbatical period ends.

It is a rumour unless officially confirmed by clubs or reputed journalists and till then we can be hopeful that Edwards fondly remembers his time at Anfield and chooses to not move pastures to our arch-rivals

As we have seen in the past, he is an astute operator and a weapon for any management to possess. Manchester United, meanwhile, have had some questionable recruitments in the recent past and if they work on that by appointing Edwards, there is no telling what kind of a force they could become.
