Transfer News: Liverpool interested in signing 2014 World Cup-winning goalkeeper

Liverpool interested in signing Hannover 96 goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler

Liverpool and Manchester United have one of the most fierce rivalries to date and it is not common for players who have represented one of the two to make a move for their rivals.

There was a big uproar when Micheal Owen made the switch to Manchester United, after his time at Liverpool and partly the reason why many do not give him the legend status at Anfield.

However, there is a possibility of another switch happening along the same lines and according to German publication BILD (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are weighing up a move for Bundesliga 2 outfit Hannover 96 goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler, who previously represented United as a teenager.

He never made a senior appearance for the Red Devils but he did play multiple times for their development teams.

Jurgen Klopp is adamant about having a stable third-choice keeper in the club and with current choice Adrian’s contract set to expire after this season, a move for Zeiler presents a wonderful opportunity.

It is because the former United man has had two spells in the Premier League, first with United and then with Leicester City, hence coming under the purview of homegrown talent making him a viable option to be part of Klopp’s squad for the 2022/23 season.

Zieler’s contract is set to expire after the end of the current season and a move to one of the heavyweights of European football would entice any player who is plying his trade in the second tier of German football.

The 33-year-old was in the Germany squad that lifted the 2014 FIFA World Cup. He has also made 295 appearances across competitions for his current club, which shows the kind of experience he can bring to the table.

Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher is the undisputed deputy of Alisson

There is no way that Alisson Becker is usurped until things take a drastic turn. The Brazil international is one of the very best in the business and it isn’t a coincidence that the Reds started winning titles once he joined us from AS Roma.

Shot-stopper Adrian could leave after his contract expires after failing to truly stake his claim as a backup keeper and with the player turning 36 next year, it would be wise to think that handing him a new contract would not be in consonance with how the club has tried to function in recent times.

It remains to be seen whether Klopp and staff would make their interest in the German keeper concrete once the summer window approaches.

For now, the player does come in the category of a viable attainable target and the move does sound enticing due to the player being a homegrown talent, hence resolving half of the issues associated with transfers.
