Writing in his weekly Premier League column with BBC as quoted by Liverpool Echo, Alan Shearer praises Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez for his incredible performance against Southampton last weekend after naming him in the Premier League team of the week.
Liverpool beat the Saints 3-1 in the game last weekend in which Roberto Firmino scored the opening goal and Darwin Nunez scored a brace whilst Che Adams was the solitary goal-scorer for Southampton.
Nunez has had a mixed start to life at Anfield. He started off well before getting suspended for three games and has since then made a solid but no flashy start to his Premier League career until now.
The performance against Southampton was one of Nunez’s best in a Liverpool shirt. He was sharp in front of the goal, made all the correct runs, found himself in the perfect positions and got rewarded with two finishes.
Jurgen Klopp has always thrown his weight behind Nunez and backed him to come good and there is no doubt that he would have been happy with what he saw from the Uruguayan in the Saints game.
Here is what Shearer wrote about the talented marksman and his comments showed a lot of admiration for Nunez.
“Crowned an impressive display with a first-half brace. He is adapting brilliantly to Klopp’s new system”
Nunez will now be off with his national team Uruguay as they look to be the underdogs and conjure something special at Qatar. They have a pretty solid team and will want to cause some upsets.
The Uruguayan is a solid striker upfront who can lead the Liverpool attack for many seasons to come. He has shown that he has the potential to be the striker that Jurgen Klopp wants and has already settled in.
A successful World Cup will only improve Nunez’s confidence. It remains to be seen how his time with Uruguay goes.
