Liverpool forward decides to stop representing his nation after FIFA World Cup snub

Liverpool forward Fabio Carvalho decides to stop playing for Portugal after the FIFA World Cup snub

According to Liverpool Echo, Liverpool summer signing Fabio Carvalho has communicated his intent to stop representing the Portuguese national team, paving way for the attacker to make a return to the England set-up.

A statement from the Portuguese Football Association read:

“Fabio Carvalho informed the Portuguese Football Federation, through some SMS messages, that he does not intend to continue representing Portugal at Under-21 level. This decision by the player was communicated after the squad for the preparation games with the Czech Republic and Japan was known.”

This decision comes after the player was not selected for Fernando Santos’ official Portugal squad for the FIFA World Cup to be held in November.

The snub allows Carvalho to be eligible to represent England after already representing the country at the youth level. It is a known fact that players of dual nationalities can choose to represent any of the two countries until they have made a senior appearance for the team.

Carvalho, who rose to prominence, with his sublime spell at Fulham in the Championship last season which prompted Liverpool to secure his signature has thoroughly impressed since his move to Anfield.

Having already made 17 appearances for the club, there is no doubt about the player’s ability with the manner and has subversively submerged himself with the first team.

At just 19 years of age, there is room for a whole of improvement but the potential is there and hopefully, we would get to see Carvalho performing to a high standard for years to come.
